Cravings Makes it Two From Two

24th June 2007

Exciting prospect Cravings (2c Encosta de Lago – Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter) made it two wins from as many starts when he overcame a heavy track and top weight of 58 kg to win the open juvenile event over 1200 metres at Randwick on Saturday.

The John Hawkes trained Cravings settled off the pace and then finished too strongly for smart filly Maltese (2f Tale of the Cat – Marwell Lady, by Lord Seymour), who battled on well to finish a length and a half back in second place with some four and a half lengths back to the rest.

“He is a magnificent horse,” said stable foreman Trevor Snowden.

“He had everything against him today … there were a lot of unknowns with the wet and the weight [58 kilograms], but he has come through with flying colours.”

Bred and retained to race by the Throsby family, Cravings is very similar in appearance to his dam Lovely Jubly, a compact muscular grey daughter of ill-fated sire Lion Hunter.

Noted at times for her high strung feisty temperament, Lovely Jubly won seven races and $1.4 million with career highlights including the Group One QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes, QTC T.J. Smith Classic and Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic, plus running a gallant second to Bollinger in the Group STC Coolmore Classic.

“He (Cravings) was a bit fiery early on but each time we put him out after being shin sore he came back a better horse and now he is bombproof. A real lovely horse,” Snowden added.

Cravings is the result of Lovely Jubly’s first season at stud when she visited Encosta de Lago, who was part-owned by Joe Throsby and raced in the red and green hoop colours carried by Cravings.

Lovely Jubly is now in foal to another Coolmore sire in Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus (USA).
