Hawk Wing colt heads to Ascot

8th June 2007

Kieren Fallon’s comeback drew a huge crowd to Tipperary on Thursday night and racegoers saw the six-time British champion jockey score on a first-crop Hawk Wing colt, who looked potentially very smart.

The Bogberry (2c Hawk Wing-Lahinch by Danehill Dancer), owned by Evie Stockwell, was a well-backed 4/7 favourite and - after finding trouble in running - he ran on to a comfortable neck success under Fallon.

"Kieren said he was just a little further back than he wanted to be, but that he quickened up well and was always confident that he would get there," said winning trainer Aidan O’Brien. "He’s a horse we’ve always liked and hopefully he’ll go for the Listed Chesham Stakes (at Royal Ascot) now and he will have no trouble stepping up in trip later on."

The Racing Post’s analysis noted: "A useful looking conditions event and it was won in likeable style by THE BOGBERRY. The Hawk Wing colt showed distinct signs of greenness on his debut at Gowran last month and he put that previous experience to good use. In a slowly run race, the winner found himself short of room on the inner and dropped back to second last turning in. He then had to be brought around horses to make his challenge and was only fourth with plenty to do over a furlong from home but he stayed on powerfully in the closing stages to get up in the final strides. The Bogberry won this with something to spare and can be rated a smart prospect. Aidan O'Brien reported that the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot would be next for the winner and he could take some beating there."
