Sixties Icon looks better than ever

7th May 2007

Sixties Icon (4c Galileo-Love Divine by Diesis), who led home a classic 1-2-3 for Galileo in last year’s G1 St Leger, returned to action looking better than ever when running away with the G2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket by three lengths.

The four-year-old, trained for Susan Roy by Jeremy Noseda, kicked on from the two-furlong marker to score in emphatic style.

"That was a good performance and he did it very smoothly, I was delighted," said Noseda. "He’ll improve a lot and I’m sure he was 7lb away from peak fitness."

The G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom is next on the agenda for Sixties Icon, who was bred by Lordship Stud and sold for 230,000gns as a yearling to John Warren.

In Ireland the same afternoon Galileo had another impressive winner who looks a prime contender for Classic glory this year.

Mahler (3c Galileo-Rainbow Goddess by Rainbow Quest), bred by Pegasus Racing, justified odds-on favouritism to run away with the PricewaterhouseCoopers Classic Trial by five lengths.

"He got to the line really good and has a bit of class," said jockey Seamus Heffernan. Mahler’s odds for the G1 Epsom Derby were slashed after the success and trainer Aidan O’Brien said that the Galileo colt was a possible for the Classic.
