Smart Win for Grand Cause
22nd April 2007
Promising three year-old Grand Cause (3g Giant’s Causeway - Lakab, by Manila) resumed from a spell to win the Class Three event over 1200 metres at the metropolitan meeting at Hawkesbury on Saturday.
Backed into favouritism, Grand Cause powered to the line in the manner of a horse going places, proving far too good for He’s Canny in an exciting finish.
The lightly raced son of Giant’s Causeway has won two of three starts, his only loss when second beaten half a length to classy galloper Sniper’s Bullet, with trainer John Hawkes now likely to send the gelding north for a tilt at some of the better races during the Queensland Winter Carnival.
A $70,000 purchase for Dynamic Syndications from the draft of Coolmore Stud at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Grand Cause (pictured as a yearling) is a half-brother to stakes-winners Roanoke and European Rose, his imported dam Lakab now back at stud in the Northern Hemisphere.

She featured at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale last week when her colt by Johannesburg made 150,000 guineas for Oak Tree Farm, knocked down to the bid of Hugo Merry Bloodstock.
Grand Cause is one of 25 winners in Australia and New Zealand this season for Giant’s Causeway, whose superior runners include stakes-winners Sangostino and Murjana, as well as stakes-place-getters Evacuate, Uberalles and Causeway Lass.
