11th December 2006

The curtain was brought down on a remarkable passage in thoroughbred breeding history when the very last son of world champion stallion Danehill was offered at public auction. The venue was Sha Tin racecourse, the occasion the 2006 Hong Kong International Sale, and by the end of proceedings a new record figure of $HK7.5 million had been realised for the northern hemisphere-bred, 2004 foaled colt from the Secretariat mare Sister Dot.

Offered as Lot 15 in a catalogue comprising 30 imported youngsters previously bought out of yearling sales staged in Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, North America and South Africa, the youngster proved responsible for a frenzy of bidding the like of which had never been witnessed before in Hong Kong. The successful bid of $HK7.5 million went to Chinese owner Cheug Keung Fai.

The Danehill colt at the centre of all the attention was purchased at the 2005 Goffs Orby Million Yearling Sale for Euro360,000. He is one of 14 foals produced by the stakes placed winner Sister Dot whose other progeny include the 1993 US Champion 2YO Colt and hugely successful sire Dehere.
